What types of presents are suitable at what stage of a relationship?
1. The Beginning of a Relationship
At the beginning of a relationship you shouldn’t be giving presents that are too personal, as you will still be getting to know each other. You may not know her well enough to get her a personal present that is appropriate. Presents that are too flashy may also put her off, as she may take this to mean you can buy her affection. Whilst giving a gift that is too flashy may put her off, giving her nothing at all might send the signal that you don’t think the relationship is important. Giving her a present shows that you care.
Appropriate gift ideas for this stage: Chocolates, Flowers, Wine, Small Gift Hampers, Teddy Bear, Tickets for Theatre/Concert/Event.
2. Starting to get Serious
When your relationship progresses to a more serious stage, you will probably know (or should take the trouble to find out!) your partner’s likes and interests quite well. You may then want to let her know how much she means to you by picking more personal presents. You might also think about buying gifts that symbolise a possible future together.
Appropriate gift ideas for this stage: Small Jewellery Pieces, Large Gift Hampers, Bespoke presents, Pampering Products (e.g. manicure sets, bath oils, vanity mirrors), Accessories.
3. Committed Relationship
You will probably want to buy presents to symbolise your love for her, and show her how much she means to you. Whilst it may be tempting to just buy her something practical once you are in a committed relationship (such as something for the home that you know she would like), that won’t be the most exciting present experience she ever has. If you are going to buy something practical, try coupling this with a small romantic present as well!
Appropriate gift ideas for this stage can be more expensive: Fine Jewellery, Bespoke Presents, Jewellery Boxes, Lingerie, Pampering Products, Vanity Mirrors, item of quality clothing or accessory.
It is up to you to decide which stage you think best reflects your relationship, and you may decide that some types of presents are/are not suitable at different stages to the above.
